. (Roadrunner) On April 18th, The Dresden Dolls will release Yes, Virginia, the follow-up to their critically acclaimed, self-titled, debut album. The Dresden Dolls will perform a special SXSW show on Thursday, March 16th at Stubb's at 11:00pm. Additionally, the band will perform at this year's Bonnaroo festival taking place in Manchester, TN on June 16-18th.
The album, produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, The Pixies, Hole, etc.) satisfies all the tall promises the critics have hurled at this band since they first started writing about them in 2002. "Provocative would be an understatement, carnal is more like it" said the Boston Globe, while The New York Times wrote: "Sometimes brutal, sometimes comic, always riveting."
The songs deliver unembellished portraits of a life that is stripped of illusion. From the opening keys of "Sex Changes," to the closing track (and lead single) “Sing,” the sound of The Dresden Dolls, Amanda Palmer's voice and piano with Brian Viglione's drums and guitar, are unmistakable and searing. Their songs descend like life-giving bombs, as she sings with grace and urgency, like her life depends on it.
The addition of an almost 30-page booklet that accompanies the new record teems with original song-inspired art, photography and painting collaboration between The Dolls and their fans, including visual artists from across the globe. The decadent result solidifies the band's commitment to creating a truly interactive band-artist coalition. This also manifests itself in the so-called "Brigade," the growing collective of performance artists who join The Dolls at almost every city of the world they tour, bedecking the venues with living and static installations ranging from burlesque trapeze acts hanging from the rafters to Dadaist bathroom art.
Comprised of pianist/singer Palmer and drummer/guitarist Brian Viglione, The Dresden Dolls' sound and image resonates a combination of the smoky cellars of a Weimar-era cabaret with the full fury of rock n' roll. The national buzz has built steadily through rave reviews in Flaunt, Soma, The New York Times, LA Times, Alternative Press, Boston Globe and more as well as by making their national late night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Additionally, MTV2 and MTVu have shown considerable support for the band by playing the videos for “Girl Anachronism” and “Coin-Operated Boy”- the latter was named one of the 10 BEST videos of 2004 by MTV's Subterranean- as voted on by the audience and was nominated for an MTVu Woodie Award. Additionally the band was hand-picked by Trent Reznor to be direct support on the acclaimed Nine Inch Nails 2005 US tour and played the Coachella Festival. This past November the band released their first ever DVD, Paradise. To date the band's debut album, which was released on Roadrunner Records in April 2004, has sold over 100,000 copies in the US alone.
